Trip Planning Resources

  • Scott re maps - As for charts & maps, topo maps are sufficient if you want to save on space and cost
    • Canadian Centre for Topographic Information
    • Canadian topographic maps are produced at scales of 1/50 000 and 1/250 000
    • We may not need charts - Coastal topographic maps at 1/50 000 here - look ideal - The Nova Scotia Coastal Series consists of 132 color maps of the province's coastal zone extending to the 12-mile limit ... The water layer is derived from Canadian Hydrographic Service digital charts - best of both worlds.
    • Tangier to Canso covered by 11/D/15, 11/D/16, 11/F/4, 11/F/3, 11/F/6 and 11/F/7 - see Coastal Series Coverage Map
    • You can buy online at $15 (€11) each. Note if searching, their listing convention is slightly different from that used in Scott's book, for example 11/D/15 is listed as 11D/15.

Costs

  • The rental we will require a 50% deposit (MasterCard or Visa). The fee based on a 7 day rental is: $250 per kayak x 7(kayaks) = $1750.00 + $262.50 (15% sales tax) = $2012.50 x 50%(booking deposit) = $1006.25. This amount is in Canadian funds. The balance will be due when you arrive.
  • So, €105 (this is the first 50% of the amount, $144 ~ €105)
  • See Kitty page for mor details.

Climate

  • Atlantic and Fundy waters are relatively cold (8-12°C) - Atlantic waters colder than Nova Scotia average - may just be above freezing in June!
  • Halifax in June: Rainfall = 102mm, Min Temp (°C) = 9, Max Temp (°C) = 20
  • Prevailing wind is south westerly.
  • Fog - The period from mid-spring to early summer is the foggiest time. Bands of thick, cool fog lie off the coast, produced where the chilled air above the Labrador Current mixes with warm, moisture-laden air moving onshore from the Gulf Stream. With onshore winds these banks of fog move far inland. Sea fog often affects the headlands by day, moving inland and up the bays and inlets at night. At other times of the year fog is much more transient and local in nature. Besides Halifax, other foggy places are Yarmouth (118 days), Canso (115 days) and Sydney (80 days)

First Aid

From Donal:

Hopefully nothing here that surprises anything.

This is something everyone need to take to heart.

Everyone is responsible for their own First Aid and well being.

  • I cannot dispense medicine. If on medicine, bring your own supply.
  • I cant treat sore elbows. Pain killers kill pain, but don't cure it. Pain is the bodies way to say its hurt. Therefore the painful bit needs rest. Therefore practice before hand.
  • Personal hygiene works wonders.
  • Eat well and get plenty of ruffege in the diet during the trip. If eating dehydrated gung, add beans etc...Too much soft stuff is not good for the digestion.
  • Why not have your annual medical/dental check before this trip.

Research shows nothing nasty out there. We are there before the mosquito season but in prime Horsefly season. Usual protection required. IE Buy what the locals are selling in MEC Tangiers if not sure.

Drinking Water. Your decision. They say tap water is ok, are you considering a portable Water Purification/filtration system?
